SDRC Energizes Aerospace Industry with Unique Metaphase® Express Aerospace and Defense Solution

SDRC Partners with Northrop Grumman, Logicon for Co-Development; Seven of Top 10 Aerospace Companies Now Use SDRC Solutions

CINCINNATI-January 16, 2001-SDRC (Nasdaq: SDRC) today, in conjunction with Logicon Inc., a Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) company, announced the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) Solution, SDRC's latest offering in its Metaphase® Express series. SDRC's partnership with Logicon leverages both companies' broad aerospace industry expertise in the co-development of this unique vertical solution. The A&D Solution has been validated in production use at Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin.

"Companies in the aerospace and defense sector are facing enormous pressures as they reposition themselves for competitive advantage," said Ed Miller, president, CIMdata, Inc. "This industry deals with extremely complex products, long development cycles, and stringent government mandates, as well as the resulting challenges of consolidation. Targeted vertical offerings, such as SDRC's A&D Solution, will be increasingly critical in fostering collaboration in the development of new aircraft and defense products, and SDRC is well positioned to increase its momentum and position in this industry."

The A&D Solution spurred a number of SDRC Q4 aerospace and defense relationships resulting in a combined total of over $15 million.

SDRC now supports seven of the top 10 aerospace and defense companies representing over $153 billion in combined revenues in this industry. SDRC's aerospace and defense industry leadership and penetration continues to increase, with breakout software license growth in this segment.

Companies implementing SDRC's A&D Solution include:

  • Thiokol Propulsion - With a recent $2.2 million order, Thiokol estimates that it will save over $1 million in implementation and development costs when SDRC's solutions are deployed at three Thiokol sites in the United States.

  • EADS Deutschland GmbH Military Aircraft (a business unit of the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company, EADS) - With an order valued at $2.4 million, EADS indicates that the widespread presence of Metaphase in product data management within European manufacturers, and its integration capabilities, will be a key asset for communication among its own organizations and within its supplier base. Siemens Business Services is implementing Metaphase for EADS Deutschland GmbH Military Aircraft.

  • Boeing Rocketdyne - Boeing Rocketdyne uses the A&D Solution to supplement their current Metaphase implementation with industry-specific capabilities.

  • BFGoodrich Aerospace Aerostructures Group - With a total relationship valued at approximately $7 million over multiple years, BFGoodrich Aerostructures is deploying 4,200 Metaphase users, including Aerospace & Defense Solution seats, in one year, at five sites worldwide.

  • Matra BAe Dynamics - With a relationship valued at approximately $4 million over multiple years, the company will deploy SDRC solutions, including the A&D Solution, for supporting their national and international product data management requirements.

  • Northrop Grumman - A 1,500 seat implementation by Logicon has reduced Engineering Change Order costs and cycle time on a number of programs, including the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber.

Several of SDRC's market-leading customers, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman, were instrumental in helping to define the A&D Solution. "At Northrop Grumman and Logicon, we were able to work directly with SDRC on the development of the A&D Solution," said Dave Torchia, manager, Product Data Management Systems, for Logicon, Northrop Grumman's information technology sector. "We hit the ground running on the Joint Strike Fighter program with SDRC tools that manage product data, connect geographically dispersed product teams, handle configuration management, and streamline time-critical processes such as engineering change and bill of materials generation. The A&D Solution delivers vital functionality in compliance with government standards – a critical factor in our industry."

"The development of our new Metaphase Express product suite, and specifically the A&D Solution, is in direct response to the special design, development, and support requirements of the aerospace and defense industry, and is the only production-proven enterprise solution targeted at this vertical market," said Glenn Wienkoop, president and COO, SDRC. "There are unique challenges inherent in the aerospace and defense industry – the management of very large, complex products; extremely long development cycles; and stringent processes for complying with explicitly defined requirements and standards. SDRC is the first vendor to be certified with the CMII standard, particularly critical for A&D companies. SDRC's success in addressing these complex requirements in conjunction with new product technology for streamlined deployment and best practices is strongly evidenced by the rapid acceptance of this solution in the market."

"CMII is the best industry practice for enabling change management, and SDRC's Metaphase products are the first to be CMII certified," said Vince Guess, president, Institute of Configuration Management. "Organizations that best accommodate change, and keep requirements and associated information clear, concise and valid have the highest quality products at the lowest price. SDRC has tremendous experience with implementations using CMII certified solutions. In addition, CMII practices facilitate inservice product maintenance and support, which is crucial to U.S. government aerospace and defense purchases."
